The Hospital of Hope

Every nation’s future is in its children. A child carries a family’s message on to the future, and all parents, naturally, wish to see their children healthy.

We work on making our dream come true: creating a world-level patient care institution in Ukraine, where children, whose diseases are yet incurable by our medicine’s means, would receive help. The All-Ukrainian Center to Protect Mothers’ and Children’s Health (hereafter the Center), a.k.a. Children’s Hospital of the Future, is to become a beacon of hope for hundreds and thousands of Ukrainian children.

The Center’s Presentation (ukr. PPT 6,5 MB)

The first stage of the project implementation envisaged broad presentation of the project and attracting many donators. With this goal we had toured all Ukraine’s oblasts, presenting the project to the public and discussing professional issues with children’s doctors. The idea to create a modern medical institution for seriously ill children has received a strong feedback both in Ukraine and abroad. To create the hospital, the philanthropists declared their preparedness to donate over UAH 262,000,000. As of January 1, 2009, over UAH 116,000,000 has come to the Center’s account.

Children’s Hospital of the Future Charitable Foundation financial statement 2008 (ukr. 82 KB)

In 2007-2008, the Foundation’s work was aimed mostly at the preparations for the Center’s construction. The Children’s Hospital of the Future Charitable Foundation signed a number of important agreements, required to start the construction. Through an unprecedented in Ukraine contest, the Center’s Designer General was elected – the British-French BDP consortium, with its 40 years of experience in working out architectural and engineering solution for medical institution. The Board of Trustees of the Children’s Hospital of the Future Charitable Program members were appointed, with Head of the Supervisory Board of the Ukraine 3000 International Charitable Foundation Kateryna Yushchenko as its head.

Being in fact pioneers in implementing such a big scale project, we have faced the need to initiate changes in the standards area. Our project was given an experimental status after its consideration by the Architectural City Development Council at the Ministry for Regional Development and Construction.

Pre-project proposals and draft project were approved by the City Development Council at the City Development, Architecture, and Urban Design Administration at the Kyiv City State Administration. A huge amount of preliminary works has been conducted: geological, geodetic, health and disease control, and other kinds of research.

The Center is a unique project for Europe. It is being subject of lively discussion with European architectural circles and architectural conferences. The philosophy of the project is that the hospital is not just a hospital but a place for recovery. It deals not only with medical requirements but a special landscape.

Floor Plans

Currently the Kyiv City Council is considering the land development project for land allotment, supplied with all required findings.

General Concept and Project Specification (ukr. PDF 265 KB)

Project Concept by BDP (PPT 17 MB)

Modern children’s patient care institution are required to meet the Green Hospital concept, i.e. have to meet not only the highest medical standards but also ecological. This places strict demands on the project and implies our great responsibility to the society. The Foundation even had to change the hospital’s future location, since the original location would require deforestation, thus violating the lot’s ecological balance.

The Foundation has worked out a medical program, with the participation of European experts, on which the design will be based. In addition to the information on room response, the medical program contains a staff register and a list of medical equipment.

At present, the Experimental Construction Program, Individual Engineering Specification, and  Design Specifications and Estimates for the Project stage are under work. After its completion, the Contractor (Developer) General will be selected on the basis of competitive bidding, through an international competition. Measures have being organized to prepare the site for construction. The Children’s Hospital of the Future construction will start in the near future.

In 2008, the supplier of medical equipment for the radiology department was selected, the ELEKTA Company, with a provisional contract being signed. The subject of the Main Contract will be purchasing, supplying, assembling, and guarantee maintenance of two linear accelerators, a computer tomographer for treatment simulations, a planning system, MOSAIQ radiology complex control system, and necessary additional equipment, as well as medical staff training.

Also in 2008, the Foundation signed a memorandum on cooperation with General Electric Healthcare International, important for the hospital’s future operation. According to the contract, GE Healthcare will provide a broad spectrum of consultations, in part, on forming strategies for the hospital’s creation and functioning, using modern medical technologies, managing a modern children’s patient care institution. GE Healthcare will also promote developing an international hospital partners network for the Children’s Hospital of the Future. Besides, the company has already conducted a monitoring of the children’s medicine situation in Ukraine.

No less important is that the modern medical education system in Ukraine in the children’s health care sector met the requirements of the medics’ daily routine. Training professional doctors, nurses, and managers will require great efforts and attention from the project executives.

Within the framework of the Expert Training Program, developed by the Foundation, groups of medical practitioners take part in video conferences and undergo trainings at Europe’s and US’s leading clinics. One of the Foundation’s most reliable partners on this program is Cedars-Sinai Medical Center (Los Angeles, CA, the USA). In 2008, the two organizations had organized a series of video conferences, studying this center’s capacities. We will be able to see the results of those training even before the Children’s Hospital of the Future starts its operation: all experts who have gone through these trainings are already using their new experience at their hospitals.

We have accomplished a lot, but this is only a tip of the iceberg.

Many problems are yet to be solved.

We thank those thousands of people and hundreds of companies who have supported us.
